Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist

Artist Statement:

It was the weakened voice of George Floyd that muttered the words, “I can’t breathe.” However, the cracks in the sidewalks of America are stained by the blood of all the other young lives of our Black children who have been taken away from us under the cruel knee of a Cracked Justice system. Justice does not bend toward Black lives in America, but instead is cracked by racist Americans wearing blue uniforms with guns at their sides and badges of authority covering up their dark hearts. It was the evil hands of hatred breaking those windows of our shops and setting fire to our neighborhoods, not us.

My quilt shows the faces, and names associated with those faces, but it does not show the hurt and pain of broken families and the hearts that they represent. I am hurt and still in disbelief of the events of this past decade, of the loss of these brilliant minds and bright futures that were taken away from us much too soon. However, I wanted to show that we are not standing alone this time, but that our white sisters and brothers have taken up the cause and are marching alongside us to tell the world that “Black Lives Matter.” The fight must continue until we can reform a Cracked Justice system.
