Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist

Artist Statement:

Being rebellious and also having a son of color, I wanted to show this quilt in every showcase I could, so that it helps create dialogue. This is my way of resisting the negative and pushing forward to enlighten stereotypes.

We live in a world which judges our men of color strictly by their looks and color of their skin. When I’ve exhibited this quilt, audience responses varied regarding the subject matter, and not the quilt itself or its design. People’s remarks varied from, “He is handsome,” “He is gorgeous,” to “Ahh, it’s just a Black guy,” and “I don’t care for it.” Almost consistently, women of color loved the quilt and not many other women appreciated this work. Racism is alive and well everywhere, even in the quilting world.
