Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist

Artist Statement:

This quilt represents the fatigue of dealing with our never-ending battle with racism and our tactics for survival. While our successes are many, the war seems to have no end. Witnessing of the murder of George Floyd shows the persistence of institutionalized racism. We must continue to fight against being marginalized and dehumanized.

The hand quilted spirals in the quilt represent growth, evolution, eternity, and pure energy. The dragonfly buttons symbolize emotional maturity and a deeper understanding of life. We must include these elements as essential tools, along with critical thinking skills, in our arsenal to continue the fight against racism. As the past 50 years have shown, we can never let our guard down. We must continue the “good trouble.”
