Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist

Artist Statement:

People responding to the murder of George Floyd by courageously rising up inspired this quilt. Protesters holding handmade signs sparked my creativity as an activist and artist. Children, youth, adults, and elders helped make signs. We told story after story while drawing. Each story inspires me to keep on participating in the current movement against systemic racism and police brutality.

Crazy quilt blocks and an uneven fence became Lafayette Park. This design shows how ridiculous it was to fence off protesters from our capital's public square. The sidewalk is depicted using crooked courthouse steps with prison bars in the center.
