Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist

Artist Statement:

This quilt is part of a series of story quilts centered on African American spirituals. Inspired by the spirit of resistance in the social justice movement, this hand painted canvas portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is framed by border xerography of various protest marches through the ages. Among the marches pictured are The Trail of Tears, Selma, marches for women’s suffrage, anti-war protests, advocating voting rights through anti-Trump protests, and demonstrations in support of Black Lives Matter. Collectively they display “Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist.” Some of the lyrics of the spiritual, “Great Day the Righteous Marching, God’s Gonna Build up Zion’s Walls,” are shown.
