Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist

Artist Statement:

This quilt honors the memory of the Black people who have been victimized by mass murders and wholesale destruction of their communities. Black communities have been destroyed by racism and envy from the white community for generations. Mainstream literature has often called these violent incidents race riots. They were massacres, not race riots. White people with the power wanted to stop the progress of Blacks, were envious of Black economic independence, and often wanted to take their land. Tulsa is just one example. The word riot implies that Black people were the ones committing destruction and mass terrorism. Blacks were the ones being terrorized and slaughtered. The killing of hundreds of Black people in a community is not a riot. It is a cold-blooded massacre.
